About the position

Postdoc : Generating extreme ultraviolet light from plasma with a 2µm laser

Research Field: Physics » Applied physics

Researcher Profile: Recognised Researcher (R2)

Job Status: Not Applicable

Is the job funded through the EU Research Framework Programme?: Not funded by a EU programme

Is the Job related to staff position within a Research Infrastructure?: No

This experiment-oriented postdoctoral position lies at the interface between fundamental physics and industrial application.

The research activities of the Source Department and its EUV Plasma Processes group aim at the atomic- and molecular-level understanding of the fundamental dynamics in the operation of contemporary and future plasma-based sources of extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) light for nanolithography.

In our group’s research we, for example, uncovered the quantum origins of the generated EUV light [Torretti, Nature Comms.

Appl. 20, (2023)], and work on an alternative EUV source solution [Mostafa, Appl.

Lett. 123, (2023)] – a concept that is most relevant for the current vacancy.

The revolutionary introduction of EUV lithography was the culmination of several decades of collaborative work between industry and science – a Project Apollo of the digital age.

The required 13.5-nm radiation is generated from plasma that is produced from tiny tin droplets that are heated by powerful laser pulses.

You will join an interdisciplinary team of several PhD students and postdocs in ARCNL’s highly cohesive Source Department and have as an objective to design & execute experiments, and work with advanced laser technologies, to understand the emission of light and ions from plasma that you generate.

The Advanced Research Center for Nanolithography (ARCNL) focuses on the fundamental physics and chemistry involved in current and future key technologies in nanolithography, primarily for the semiconductor industry.

ARCNL is a public-private partnership between the Dutch Research Council (NWO), the University of Amsterdam (UvA), the VU University Amsterdam (VU), the University of Groningen (UG), and the semiconductor equipment manufacturer ASML.

The position is intended as full-time (40 hrs / week, 12 months / year) appointment in the service of the Netherlands Foundation for Scientific Research Institutes (NWO-I) for the duration of up to 3 years, with a starting salary of €4,552 gross per month, scale 10 (CAO-OI), and a range of employment benefits.

A favorable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants.

We strongly encourage anyone with the right qualifications to apply for the vacancy, regardless of age, gender, origin, sexual orientation or physical ability.

Is the job funded through the EU Research Framework Programme?: Not funded by a EU programme

Is the Job related to staff position within a Research Infrastructure?: No

A fully funded PhD position is available in the group of Prof.

Tristan Bereau at the Institute for Theoretical Physics, Heidelberg University, in collaboration with the group of Prof.

The successful candidate will develop generative machine-learning methods for amorphous molecular thin films — the supramolecular structures that govern the performance of organic-electronic materials.

Equilibrating such films by brute-force molecular dynamics is prohibitively slow.

The work sits at the interface of statistical mechanics, molecular simulation, and deep generative modeling, and is embedded in SIMPLAIX, a research initiative on multiscale simulation and machine learning funded by the Klaus Tschira Foundation.

Experience with machine learning and/or molecular simulation; strong Python and PyTorch skills

Genuine interest in method development, and comfort with mathematical formalism

A degree in physics is required for admission to the Heidelberg Graduate School for Physics (HGSFP).

This is a formal admission requirement.

The position is funded for three years at 75% of salary group E13 TV-L.

Please note that a 75% appointment is the standard arrangement for doctoral researchers in German physics departments: this is a full doctoral position, and the remaining time is your own thesis work.

It is not a part-time job requiring additional income.

The working language of the group is English; no German is required.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

If the deadline shown above has passed, please check the group website or write directly — the position may still be open.

About the position

PhD positions in optoelectronic semiconductors

So far, the functions of semiconductors are mainly defined by chemical and physical properties of their components, and organic and inorganic semiconductors are treated as separate research areas.

We want to overcome the divide in material systems and tailor unprecedented optoelectronic properties by the

International German-Australian Research Training Group:

Optical excitations in organic and inorganic semiconductors (OPTEXC) –

The University of Bayreuth (Germany), the University of Melbourne (Australia) and Monash University (Australia) together have constituted an interdisciplinary International Research Training Group in the areas of experimental and theoretical physics, synthetic, physical and computational chemistry, electrical engineering, material sciences and related areas.

We are looking for highly talented, passionate graduate students (m/f/d) with excellent track records interested in pushing forward our understanding of nature and its application in technology.

The project builds on our established, supportive scientific network and includes research stays at a German and an Australian partner, leading to Joint PhDs with degrees from two universities.

Information on how to apply can be found here.

The positions are fully funded for minimum of three years:

TV-L E13 75% (joint PhD with 2 years in Bayreuth, 1 year in Melbourne) or

equivalent PhD stipend (2 years in Melbourne, 1 year in Bayreuth).

This PhD project will explore how generative AI, molecular dynamics, and density functional theory (DFT) can be combined to accelerate the discovery and design of next-generation organic semiconductor materials with tailored optoelectronic properties.

The project offers the opportunity to contribute to an emerging area of interdisciplinary research that brings together artificial intelligence and advanced materials modelling to address key challenges in semiconductor discovery.

As part of the IRTG OPTEXC program, you will work at the intersection of generative AI, computational chemistry, molecular simulation and materials science, developing computational approaches to explore and predict new semiconductor materials and their properties.

This Joint PhD project will be primarily based at Monash University with a minimum 12-month stay at the University of Bayreuth.

About the position

Ph.D Student (m/f/d) - AI-Driven Multiscale Modeling for TMD Materials Synthesis and Characterization (Full-time)

About the position

This fully funded PhD position is part of the NSF-DFG DMREF project

“AI-Driven Platform for 2D Materials Synthesis and Discovery,” an

international effort to establish a predictive framework for the synthesis of

two-dimensional materials.

By integrating computational materials science

with autonomous experimentation and artificial intelligence, the project aims

to uncover how synthesis conditions govern material formation and use this

knowledge to guide the discovery and controlled growth of 2D materials.

The PhD candidate will focus on computational modeling of synthesis and

characterization of 2D materials across multiple length and time scales,

with a particular focus on transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs).

research will combine density functional theory (DFT), ReaxFF reactive

evolution and to develop predictive models that connect atomistic mechanisms

with experimentally accessible synthesis conditions.

The position is embedded in a highly interdisciplinary collaboration spanning

materials synthesis and characterization, computational materials science,

This environment will allow the candidate to connect fundamental atomistic insight

with experiments and larger-scale descriptions of the synthesis environment,

developing a broad multiscale and multiphysics perspective on materials growth-from

synthesis processes.

Your responsibilities

Conduct reactive simulations using ReaxFF to investigate precursor gas-phase

and develop reproducible workflows for analysis, publications, and presentations.

Bachelor's and master’s degrees in materials science or physics.

A strong interest in computational modeling of materials and in learning across

Prior experience with DFT, reactive molecular dynamics/ReaxFF, MLIPs, atomistic simulation, or related computational methods is highly desirable.
